Memorial Weekend First

Monday, May 31st, 2010

What a busy weekend it was for the Smith’s.  Cosby’s First Memorial Day (not really all that significant), his first big Skat tournament, his first Hinton Dairy Queen experience, and  his first trip to the river.  And most importantly, Joe’s and my first big win at the Skat tournament!

dsc02937Every year on Memorial weekend, in honor of Granny Huddy,  Joe’s dad’s family gets together to play a game called Skat.  It’s a card game, with a $15 buy in, where you’re dealt 3 cards and the goal is to get highest number cards in the same suit- there’s a little more to it but it but I won’t bore you with the details.  We start out with 20 some players at 3 tables and the top 2 from every table goes to the final table.  Well, to make a not to long story even less long, Joe and I got first and second place with the total cash pay out of $220.  Also, Joe came ahead a dollar while playing poker,  putting us at a grand total of $221- and there are those of you who are against gambling…this sounds to me like a little biblical parabalizing of Mathew 25 happening here!

dsc02958The river is a place of nostalgia for me.  Ever year since I can remember,  summer holidays have been spent at my grandpa’s camp on the river- and many other summer days as well.  It’s the common ground for all of my dad’s family.  We really wanted to take Cosby last year but he wasn’t quite old enough but now he is at a great age.  He loved the water and eating rocks, which by the way, almost gave me a heart attack because I don’t think I’ve ever had him around so many small objects that he can eat.

We topped off the weekend with a nice trip to the Hinton Dairy Queen.  dsc03028

Ahhh… I love family weekend!
